Self-control can be considered a muscle that needs to be exercised to get stronger. If you have low self-control it makes it nearly impossible to complete any big life goals. So before tackling a career overhaul, a major diet or any other massive life goal – beef up your self-control and will power with this exercise.
Come up with a list of 10 small goals, things you want to make into every day habits: taking vitamins, reading to your daughter every night, showing up at work 15 minutes early, leaving work on time, drinking eight glasses of water, meditating, reading a chapter of a book daily, etc.
We have a limited supply of self-control so trying to chase several goals at once is nearly impossible until you increase your reservoir of self-control. That’s why in this exercise you will tackle one small goal before moving on to the next goal. Benjamin Franklin created this character building strategy and CEOs have been using it ever since!
Now, pick one of your ten goals and commit to it for two weeks. You must accomplish this goal every day for two weeks. Draft a chart so you can track your progress. This exercise will build your will power and self-control. After two successful weeks, move on to your next goal.
