Now Fashion Week around the world has started, who better to feature this month than a designer who had a fabulous 2012 – Prajje 1983. I didn’t have anyone in my family who made clothes. I just enjoyed making dolls clothes. I had more dolls than GI. Joes. Although, typical Haitian parents, they wanted me to be a lawyer, but when I moved to the US, I realized fashion was an option.   AC: What was your inspiration for Spring 2013? “La Perle Des Antilles”is more edited and less theatrical than my past collections, “Peasant I and II”. Sneaky strategies for a soft smooch

Unexpected household products help heal a dry pucker.   The key to soft, kissable lips are keeping them moisturized. However, in the dead of winter it can be tricky to keep your lips supple. Chapped lips from the harsh winter wind hurt, peel and aren’t great to look at. Here are three common household items you can use to help this winter.     Olive Oil Just a drop of olive oil on your lips will instantly moisturize them and penetrate deep under the skin. Some use baby oil, however, most baby oils are mineral based and end up clogging pores instead of penetrating.   Noxzema Dabbing Noxzema on chapped lips will soothe the burn and heal any blisters. The cream moisturizes, while the eucalyptus reduces any inflammation. The menthol acts as a temporary anesthetic and will provide relief from any soreness.   Alberto V05 Conditioner Relieve soreness from chapped lips by rubbing some V05 conditioner on your lips. The “V05” stands for the five vitamins found in the conditioner; vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin D and vitamin B5.   Sources: “Amazing Kitchen Cores” by Joey Green; Noxzema.com ; webmd.com; vo5.com

Second annual Uni Haiti gala raises money for new campus in Leogane

Like a phoenix rising from its ashes, post-earthquake Haiti is seeing its fair share of innovation with an influx of business and education opportunities emerging. In January 2010 , Léogâne, a port town about 35 miles southwest of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince, was devastated when the earthquake epicenter hit the community.Despite the destruction caused by the quake, three years later, plans to build an international university are in the works at the very site where so much was lost only a few years ago.     The James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation and the United Nations’ social club Aux Antilles hosted the second annual “International University Center Haiti Gala” and silent auction on Nov. 10 at the Bohemian National Club in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Special recognition was given to Congressman Charles B. Rangel and Kathleen Felix, general director of Kanpe Foundation for their commitment to Haiti.   With more than 200 guests in attendance, proceeds from the benefit went to supporting the construction of the International University Center Haiti (Uni Haiti), which includes four campuses along rue de Croix in Leogane.   The planned UniHaiti Youth Hostel “Relationships are integral to both human life and to international development,” Jim Luce, … read more

Online flirting: Is it cheating?

There’s a fine line between cheating and flirting. Boundaries between the two vary from couple to couple. There are always discussions about what’s considered cheating and what’s not. However, in today’s day and age, there’s one particular issue that falls in a gray area; online flirting.     Eighty-two percent of women believe online flirting is a form of cheating, according to the State of Dating Report, a study conducted by JDate and Christian Mingle; two online dating sites. Only 56 percent of men agreed it was considered cheating.   “It’s very hard to draw conclusions with regard to cheating,” Rachel Sussman, a New York-based marriage and family therapist and licensed clinical social worker said. “What is important to remember when looking at this stat [about women’s and men’s different definitions of cheating] is that the difference of opinion about this topic can create problems for relationships.” Sussman partnered with JDate and Christian Mingle to analyze their findings. About 2,700 U.S. singles between the ages of 18 and 60 were surveyed.   One of the major reasons flirting could be considered cheating is many people believe it could lead to physical contact. Another finding the State of Dating study found … read more

Caribbeans in the U.S. and Canada Share Thoughts on Home and Culture

“Being born to two Haitian immigrants, I am reminded every day of my heritage. I recently bought my mom a satellite radio so she can listen to all the radio stations in Haiti. It’s rare to walk into my house and not hear Kompa playing at all times     “Hands down [the best cultural festival] has to be the Labor Day parade (West Indian Day parade).I live blocks away from Eastern Parkway so it is hard to think of another Caribbean festival that comes close to it in NYC. I do wish it was a little more family oriented; I would love to come back and bring my future kids to experience the culture.   “I do really hope the Caribbean community (specifically in NYC) could have more unity. Many of us deal with the same struggles to hold on to our culture while adapting to a new one (American culture). I would love for my family and generations to come to know their heritage; so I think more educational programs and organizations should come from within the Caribbean community in order to expose the youth. With unity among the Caribbean community, funding these types of organizations would beno … read more
