His Art will Last…in Memory of Burton Chenet

In tribute to the life and death of Burton Chenet, one of Haiti’s most accomplished artists, enjoy this Q&A from the Amour Creole summer 2011 issue.     You are currently living in Port-au-Prince. Can you describe life as an artist and person living in Haiti after the earthquake?   Life right now started after it had stopped that terrible day at 4:55 in the evening. We will never forget what happened to us. Our stories go on of what we went through. I’m trying to get back to work and have routine. Everywhere people are focused on the reconstruction of Haiti. I’m happy to see some people are helping in the arts. Music and art shows are being organized to raise money. Life has to come back. It was literally taken away.   Has the recent tragedy affected your work in any way?   I don’t know yet. I think in some way it will. I’ll find out when I start to work, which will be soon I hope. For a long time I’ve been wanting to work in black and white only, so now I think is a good time to start. After this terrible event I felt … read more

Runny Nose No More

As the temperature starts to drop most people are plagued by an incessant runny nose. It leaves you searching ferociously for a napkin or tissue, or anything to stop the leakage. Well here are a few tips to help you with deal.     Gatorade Drinking Gatorade will not only replenish your vital bodily fluids, but it will also keep your nasal passages clear. The electrolytes keep the mucous lining of your nose moist. Gatorade also rehydrates the body.   Garlic Adding some garlic to your food will help clear up your runny nose. Garlic has a chemical called allicin in it that makes the mucus less sticky, which allows all of it to come out with one good blow. Allicin has antibacterial and antifungal properties that help the body fight different types of infections.   Vaseline and Cotton Swabs Soothe a sore nose from too much blowing by applying Vaseline around your nostrils with a cotton swab.   Sources: http://altmedicine.about.com , “Amazing Kitchen Cures” by Joey Green

CHAPTER 1: 15 Minutes to Meet My Husband and I Don’t Have Hair Mousse

Friday afternoon in an Italian café and I’m under deadline. Sweaty, over-caffeinated, undernourished and dying for booze – the basic profile of any news reporter.     I type the last sentences of an article for a local paper, hit send on the email and the story is whisked off to web-world where it will land on my editor’s desk miles away from this cozy café.

Partying it Up for St. Patty?

If you find yourself miserably hung-over the next day, follow these tips to ease your pain.     Tomato Juice Drink a glass of tomato juice to flush the toxins from your body. The fructose in tomato juice accelerates your body’s ability to metabolize alcohol. Tomatoes are also a good source of Vitamin C – a great antioxidant which helps break down alcohol.   Chocolate Eating a bar of chocolate will replenish the amino acids you lost because of alcohol. Chocolate is also high in caffeine, which is an active ingredient in painkillers and may alleviate some discomfort.   Gatorade Alcohol dehydrates your body. Drinking Gatorade throughout the day will replace vital electrolytes your body lost and help relieve a headache.   Sources: chemisty.about.com; time.com; “Amazing Kitchen Cures” by Joey Green   Photo Credit : Piyaphantawong
