The biggest stars in the Haitian movie industry came out on Sunday, April 22 to for the 4th Annual Frantz Design Haitian Movie Awards at the Hilton in New York City.
“It’s important for us to promote all aspects of our culture and all forms of art specifically, the movie industry,” Carrie Solages, a first-generation Haitian-American legislator in Nassau County said. “The Indians have their Bollywood. The Nigerians have their successful film industry. We also want Haitians to have a viable [movie] industry. We deserve that because we have a beautiful culture.”
While many industries in Haiti have seen little to no accelerated growth, the entertainment industry has grown exponentially. With the creation of the Motion Picture Association of Haiti in 2007, Haitian filmmakers have a supportive organization that aims to place “Haitian films in the international market and to protect and defend the rights of the Haitian writers, directors, actors and other specialists in the field of filmmaking.”
“I feel very excited to be nominated,” DieunetteDeliard, who was nominated for Best Actress, said. “It’s a wonderful privilege to see that the people like the work that I do.” Deliard has worked in the Haitian film industry since 2008. She was nominated in 2008 for Best Supporting actress for her role in Un PlasirMortel.
“Anyone can watch my movies and learn something from it,” Deliard said.“That’s what makes my movies different form other Haitian movies. I put everything I can to make the movie a success.”
“I’m happy to be a part of the festivities,” Solages said.
