How to Prevent a Spouse from Cheating

There are no guarantees in love, nor are there fool-proof ways to prevent your significant other from cheating. However, you can minimize the risk of infidelity in a relationship. Check out these tips to get a good start on a healthy relationship.   Get to Know Your Partner Often when two people first meet, the novelty and excitement of a new relationship causes a woman to jump straight in before fully knowing her partner. Take your time and look for those tell-tale signs of a cheating man: lapses in communication, disappearing acts, defensiveness when asked about his whereabouts and hesitation to introduce you to friends and family. Practice patience and watch for red flags before taking the plunge.   Set Standards and Consequences In the beginning of a relationship it’s important to let your partner know upfront what you expect and what will happen if he falls short. “Men aren’t always aware of the consequences [of their actions],” said relationship expert Yanni Brown, author of Making Love Better Begins Within. Cheating is normalized because of the media, which breeds complacency, said Brown. Therefore, men are not afraid to cheat unless women communicate consequences – so let him know you’ll jump … read more

Is Sunscreen Really Necessary?

Dark-skinned people are more likely to die from skin cancer because the cancers are often not caught until the later stages of growth and are typically more aggressive, which leads to disproportionately more deaths among minority populations, according to research from the University of Cincinnati.

The not so lonely life of being single

Despite the litany of complaints you’ll hear from 20-something year old girls about the woahs of their “Sex and the City” life, research shows being single isn’t a thing to complain about. In fact, being single has its fair share of advantages.     The widespread assumption that living alone is negative is a flawed one, said Eric Klinenberg, author of Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone. There’s a distinction between being single, isolated and feeling lonely.   “People who live alone tend to spend more time socializing with friends and neighbors than people who are married,” he said. “Living alone is not an entirely solitary experience. It’s generally a quite social one.”   Although past studies have indicated married couples were happier and healthier, distinctions are made between happy marriages and bad ones.   “A bad marriage can make a person feel more isolated than being single,” Klinenberg said in an interview with the New York Times.   Until about the 1950s there hadn’t been any society that supported large populations of singles living alone, he said. There are more than 32 million Americans who are single, compared to 4 million in the 1950s.

Kiss smelly feet goodbye

There are days you wake up and don’t feel like putting much effort into anything so when you need to run out the door, you likely throw on the first thing in sight. This means you’re probably punishing your feet with your beaten Uggs or worn sneakers. As comfortable as these old shoes are, they can also do some damage.

How to Actually Make Dreams Come True

Self-control can be considered a muscle that needs to be exercised to get stronger. If you have low self-control it makes it nearly impossible to complete any big life goals. So before tackling a career overhaul, a major diet or any other massive life goal – beef up your self-control and will power with this exercise.     Come up with a list of 10 small goals, things you want to make into every day habits: taking vitamins, reading to your daughter every night, showing up at work 15 minutes early, leaving work on time, drinking eight glasses of water, meditating, reading a chapter of a book daily, etc.   We have a limited supply of self-control so trying to chase several goals at once is nearly impossible until you increase your reservoir of self-control. That’s why in this exercise you will tackle one small goal before moving on to the next goal. Benjamin Franklin created this character building strategy and CEOs have been using it ever since!   Now, pick one of your ten goals and commit to it for two weeks. You must accomplish this goal every day for two weeks. Draft a chart so you can track … read more

Reflections from the After Party

Concert goers talk at post-benefit gala   The second anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010, brought people together from all over for one purpose; keeping the momentum for reconstruction alive.     Following the Community2Community “Hope and a Future” benefit concert, attendees and the performers went to Deity for the after party to celebrate the success of “Hope and a Future.”   “In one word, this event was amazing,” Shana Llewellyn said. “It gave me what I needed; something spiritual from the choir, something inspirational with the dancing, and something fun with the music.”   Haitian rapper Mecca aka Grimo, was tutoring a child when he first learned of the earthquake. Being of Haitian descent he felt it was only natural that he take to the stage for the benefit concert.   “My interests even before the earthquake were about elevating Haiti and enforcing Haitian pride,” Mecca said. At the beginning of his musical career, he decided against going mainstream and chose to rap in Creole instead.   “This is just what I’ve always been doing,” he said, “trying to change Haiti’s image, helping rebuild. C2C’s vision is parallel to that, so I was happy they found … read more

Passion Fuels 2nd Annual C2C “Hope and A Future” Benefit for Haiti

January 12, 2012 marked the second anniversary of the 7.0 cataclysmic earth quake that devastated Haiti. The media attention may have fizzled. However, the spirit and consciousness of the Haitian community and its supporters was alive and thriving at Community 2Community’s (C2C) second annual “Hope and A Future” Benefit Concert for Haiti. Produced by Elona Dotson of Psalmist Productions Inc., the electrifying, spectacular, cultural milestone took place at Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts Friday, January 13th.   The move to Brooklyn, home to the largest Haitian communities stateside with more than 86,000 Haitian residents, seemed only fitting. There was no border between stage and audience, no sense of distance or fourth wall for the more than fifty performers as they sang, rapped, danced and showcased their talents and gifts over the course of three and one-half hours. The energy was transformational and contagious and evident in C2C founder Marie-Yolaine Eusebe’s spontaneous conversation at the close of the event. She emerged as if from a black shadow landing center stage to repeat words gleaned from the crowd—“incredible,” “awesome,” and “beautiful”—in response to her question, “So what did you think?”   The audience was still on its feet during the finale, “Ain’t … read more
